The Getty Villa

    Nestled in the hills along the Pacific coast, we celebrate the 50th year anniversary of The Getty Villa! Opened in 1974, this beautiful villa takes you back to the times of ancient Roman, Greek, and Etruscan civilization.
   The strong influence of Roman and Greek history introduces aspects of astrotheology, defined by the study of celestial patterns, their connections to religion, and the esoteric expressions of these dieties and astrological (zodiac) signs.
This is an exact replica of the mosaic fountain at Casa Della Fontana Grande, in Pompeii!
Additionally, there’s currently an exhibition featuring sculpted portraits of 26th dynasty ancient Egyptian figures/officials!

The Getty Villa now serves as a space for education and enjoyment, providing: art, activities, programs and performances, ultimately giving a rich cultural experience for all ages.
Mr. J. Paul Getty never saw this dream realized however, as he passed away shortly after it’s opening. His return to the property was sealed by his memorial atop the hill of the ranch, overlooking the Pacific.
  Your ideas, efforts, and works will have an immense impact in the world around us, no matter how small, or how grand these manifestations look/feel in the present.

Frank LLoyd Wright's
Hollyhock House
Formerly known as Olive Hill, this stunning property was purchased in 1919 by oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. With big plans for the space, she hired world renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design Hollyhock House. This marked Wright’s first commission in Los Angeles, and his first of many historical homes/buildings throughout the city.
The name “Hollyhock” derives from Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the hollyhock. Wright carried this inspiration throughout the interior and exterior of the home, in both abstract and actual representations.
An important feature of this house is the fireplace. Wright created this concrete design as an abstraction of the Hollyhock House, as well as the combined use and inspiration from the Earth, water, air, and fire.
Along with the use and abstraction of the elements, this house is defined greatly by Mayan architectural design, seen and used in other historic Wright homes in LA.
Barnsdall and Wright’s vision for not just the property, but for the entire city of Los Angeles, came to life in many unforseen ways. Shortly after the house was completed, the famous Hollywood sign (1922) and the Griffith Observatory (1935) were hoisted upon the mountains of LA. This is just one of many breathtaking views around the property.
This Barnsdall and Wright connection birthed a surge of artistry and architecture, introducing distinguished architects Rudolf Schindler, Richard Neutra, as well as Lloyd Wright (Wright’s eldest son) to the scene.
As an avid supporter of the arts, Aline Barnsdall donated the property to the city, where future generations can also be inspired to create history of their own.
The Hollyhock House is a reminder of the great unknowns of our visions, and the potential greatness achieved from following them.
